3. Grammar: word order in questions

1. Grammar: Present simple affirmative and negative

1. Look at the highlighted verbs. Why do some verbs end in -s?
Miramos los verbos subrayados. ¿Por qué hay algunos verbos que acaban en -s?

The form for he/she/it of the present simple ends in -s.
La forma para el/ella/ello del presente simple acaba en -s.

2. Write the he/she/it form of these verbs. Escribe la forma el/ella/ello de estos verbos.

3. Find two negative verbs. How are they different from positive verbs?

4. Pronunciation: third person -s

The -s ending for the third person singular in present simple is pronounced three ways:
La terminación -s para la tercera persona singular en presente simple se pronuncia de tres maneras:

/s/ (ese liquida) after unvoiced consonants (f, k, p, t)
/z/ (ese vibrante) after voiced consonants and vowels 
/iz/ after ce, ch, ge, sh, s, tch, x

* Es muy importante pronunciar claramente el sonido final en las formas verbales que acaban en -s para distinguirlos de la forma base. Es un error muy común olvidarse de conjugar el verbo con la tercera persona singular (he, she, it) en el presente simple.

What do these words from the text on page 21 mean?

pay -> pagar
drive -> conducir
sell -> vender
give -> dar
need -> necesitar
buy -> comprar
use -> usar, utilizar
prefer -> preferir
feel -> sentir, sentirse
call -> llamar, telefonear 

These are all common verbs. Son todos verbos comunes.

Is Spain similiar or different to Britain? Let's compare.
¿España es parecido o diferente al Reino Unido? Vamos a comparar.

Spain is a good place for walking, but it isn't a very good place for cyclists because drivers can be dangerous.
España es un buen lugar para pasear, pero no es muy bueno para ciclistas porque los conductores pueden ser peligrosos.

Drivers in Spain aren't as patient and polite as in Britain.
Los conductores en España no son tan pacientes y educados como los del Reino Unido.

Chemists in Spain also sell other products, not just medicine.
Farmacias en España también venden otros productos, no solo medicamentos.

People in Spain must have an ID card, and they must take it with them.
La gente en España debe tener un DNI y lo deben llevar con ellos.

Useful words - Palabras útiles

Why? -> ¿por qué?
because -> porque

Usamos "because" para contestar a preguntas que empiezan con "why"

Why are summers in Santoña nice? ¿Por qué los veranos en Santoña son buenos?

Because the temperature is very nice. Porque la temperatura es muy buena.
